Abstract

This paper provides a historical account about of taxonomy of Mexican fauna of centipedes (Chilopoda). A total of 180 identified species(one fossil) in 77 genera, 17 families and four orders have been recorded for Mexico. Twenty-six genera and 155 species are endemic (onefossil). Only one family is endemic: Eriphantidae (Geophilomorpha). At the generic level, four biogeographical elements are recognizable inMexican centipedes: endemic, Holartic, Neartic, and Neotropical. This work includes a checklist with the centipedes species cited for Mexico andthe states of this country where each species has been collected. The diversity and distribution of Mexican centipedes is still poorly known andunderestimated.
