Abstract

Considering the biological, ecological and economic importance of dung beetles, in this work some bionomic data of Planolinellus vittatus (Say, 1825) are presented. This species is not abundant in the site of study, but it is found nearly all the year. Highest densities are recorded during spring and the beginning of summer, from March to the beginning of June, in coincidence with dry periods with low humidity and high temperature. It is a multivoltine species, with reproductive cycles overlapping all the time, but with a higher reproductive activity during those months in which there are more individuals. The preimaginal development lasts from 17 to 20 days at 23°C and it happens in the superficial dry crust of the cowpat. Females and males mature very fast, and begin to reproduce 10 days after emergence, lasting their reproductive period about 15 days, and dying at the end of their reproductive activity. All these data are necessary to implement conservation measures for these insects which are seriously affected by the chemical residues used in agriculture and cattle raising.
