Abstract

The academic profile of Dr. Tila M. Pérez-Ortiz is presented as a tribute and recognition of a lifetime pursuing and promoting the development of science and particularly of Acarology, reflected in the publication of more than a hundred articles, book chapters and books, as well as memories in extenso and 18 scientific-divulgation publications. She has described 23 genera and 93 new species of mites and other arachnids, among these, more than 50% correspond to species of bird mites. Her contributions to the taxonomy and biology of feather mites have been recognized nationally and internationally. Also noteworthy are her contributions to the knowledge of mites associated with reptiles and mites of medical importance, such as ticks and chiggers, as well as other lines of research in other groups of arthropods. Tila M. Pérez-Ortiz has been full-time Professor at the School of Sciences of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), and full-time Researcher at the Institute of Biology at the same university, where she currently serves as Curator of the National Collection of Mites, with almost 50 years of academic experience. She also became the first woman Director of the Institute of Biology and the first woman president of the International Congress of Acarology in a Latin American country. At present, she is in charge of the General Directorate of University Repositories, where she has made great contributions towards the organization, systematization and open access of the university collections, including biological ones.
